  • Research Summary:

My laboratory uses Drosophila genetics and molecular biology to study universal mechanisms of development. We do most of our experiments with the Drosophila compound eye. Patterning of the Drosophila compound eye involves nearly every known cell signaling pathway and the eye affords many experimental advantages. We are studying how cell-cell interactions are regulated by membrane trafficking and ubiquitin. Also, are using a Drosophila model to understand Angelman syndrome, a human neurological disease caused by loss of function of a gene called UBE3A. UBE3A encodes a specificity factor for ubiquitination. We are using Drosophila genetics to understand the function of UBE3A and the biochemical effects of its loss relevant to Angelman syndrome.
