3130 and 3730 DNA Analyzers
The
DNA Facility has two DNA sequencers, the ABI 3130 and the ABI 3730 DNA Analyzers.
These instruments are capillary based, use Big Dye chemistries, and run on
AB Data Collection software.

The ABI 3730 runs
48 samples simultaneously with sequencing in 2 hours/run and fragment in 45 minutes/run. The advantages to using
the 3730 include:
- Great read lengths and quality scores.
- Our pGEM control consistently has >800
Phred score.
- Fast run times for large number of samples.
- Little instrument maintenance is needed.
- A great “work horse.”

The ABI 3130 runs
16 samples simultaneously with sequencing in 2 hours/run and fragment in 45 minutes/run. The advantages to using
the 3130 include:
- Great read lengths and quality scores.
- Do not have to run a full 96 well plate.
Running 16 samples is efficient.
- Direct injection of samples. No sample
transfer.
- Very small volume of reagents and waste.
- Can run both fragment analysis and samples
efficiently.
