Graduate School Information

Housing Information

University housing is very limited and we strongly suggest considering other housing options. Three apartment complexes make up the University Apartments:
Brackenridge, Colorado and Gateway. Please note that application for housing is separate from application to The University of Texas at Austin. Applicants must be admitted or enrolled by the preferred move-in date specified on the application. Applicants are placed on a waiting list according to the date the application is received.

The following links may assist you in your search for housing:

ID Cards

Any student who has been officially admitted to the University may obtain an ID card. ID cards are required once students arrive on campus. Please bring a photo ID (driver's license, passport, or another government-issued ID card). A $10 fee will be charged for each ID card. For location and hours, see Office Information . The ID Center only accepts payment by check, but payments may also be made online under What I Owe within 30 days or in cash to the Cashier's Office in Room 8 in the Main Building.

Online Orientations

Registration

Don't worry! Barbara will register you for your classes.  You will do your own registration for the following semesters, with the help of the graduate coordinators and advisors as needed. Complete registration instructions can be found in the Course Schedule that is published each semester by the Office of the Registrar.

Safety Training Requirements

The University requires safety training for all laboratory employees to insure that they are adequately informed about physical and health hazards present within the laboratory and methods for minimizing the risks of exposure.

The following online courses must be completed before you start work in a CMB lab.
You must be registered for summer or fall before you can access these courses!

  1. Hazard Communication - This course describes the hazards of working with hazardous chemicals or biological materials.
  2. Laboratory Safety - This course explains general lab safety.

The courses below are not online and will be scheduled for you by the CMB Graduate Program.  At orientation you will receive the times and dates these courses will be offered.

  1. Basic Radiological Health - This 8 hour course describes the hazards of using radiation and appropriate safe lab practices.
  2. Fire Extinguisher Training -This hands-on training familiarizes participants with the proper use of the portable fire extinguishers.
  3. ARC Training - Orientation to the Policies and Procedures for Animals Research at UT Austin.

Shuttle and Bus Information

With your UT ID Card, you can ride UT shuttles and city buses free! Many apartments throughout Austin are conveniently located on City and/or University bus routes. When making your decision regarding housing, you may want to take bus information into account.

UT EID

Your UT EID is an electronic identifier that will allow you to use secure services which require you to identify yourself, for example UT Direct or Webmail. These services are part of UT Austin's Campus Information available on the World Wide Web. A UT EID is not necessary to use publicly available information, for example the UTCAT library catalog. You must be a UT Austin student, faculty or staff member, or be otherwise affiliated with UT Austin in order to have a UT EID.

Where do I get my UT EID ?

Everyone is assigned a UT EID when they become affiliated with UT Austin.
For example, students are assigned UT EIDs when they are admitted and faculty and staff receive theirs when they are hired.

In order to use your UT EID you must "activate" your UT EID. At that time you may choose to keep the default name as your UT EID or you may make up your own UT EID. You must also choose a password when you claim your UT EID. Once you have claimed your UT EID and chosen your password, your UT EID is ready to use.

If you do not know your UT EID or you have not activated it yet, go to the UT EID Help Suite . Once you have found your UT EID the system will guide you through activating it. It will ask questions about your position at the university and what type of information you have to identify yourself. Different university positions require different types of identifying information.

If you know your UT EID, the UT EID Help Suite will assist you in changing your EID, maintaining your password, and upgrading your security level.
